JUST ABOUT THE TIME you think you have
Costco all figured out—boom You find yourself face
to face with a totally awesome new treasure. This
recently happened to me when I took a stroll down
the Special Order Kiosk aisle and paused in front of
window treatments. I couldn’t believe the selection
of shutters, shades and draperies.
I quickly tracked down the buyer at Costco’s
headquarters, Steve Skiles, to learn more. In our
conversation, Steve brought me up-to-date on
what’s new in window fashions at the in-warehouse
kiosks and online at costco.com.
Pat Volchok: I just discovered luscious wooden
shades at the Special Order Kiosk. What’s up?
Steve Skiles: We’ve really notched up the entire
window-fashions programs and now give members
lots of exceptional choices in categories from do-it-for-you to do-it-yourself.
For example, we offer Hunter Douglas products. This company has been in the window-fashion
business for more than half a century.
And for Costco members, there’s quite a
bonus—complimentary in-home design consulting. (Members who live more than 25 miles from a
Costco warehouse pay a minimal trip charge.)
Carole Fabrics (a division of Hunter Douglas)
creates window-fabric options such as coordinating
swags, draperies and curtains. Kasmir Fabrics augments fabric choices with a vast array of embroidered silks and novelty prints.
And then there’s Graber, a fashion leader in custom blinds, shades and woven woods since 1939.
Graber lets members take care of new window treatments on their own—at big savings.
PV: Custom-made draperies and woven
wood shades from Costco? That’s just amazing. What about costco.com?
SS: Costco.com offers window-fashion choices such as ready-made, elegant
100 percent dupioni silk drapes; classic,
heavyweight-cotton, tab-top drapes; and
100-percent-cotton velvet drape panels in
a range of sizes and colors.
PV: So where does a member start?
SS: The question really boils down to how
much time and money you are willing to put into
the project. If you want assistance with selection,
measuring and installation, then the best choices are
Hunter Douglas, Carole or Kasmir.
