Key to marketing:
Keep it simple
FOR ALL THOSE business owners who love to use a lot of words—
the bigger, the better—long sentences and “legalese” when trying to
communicate with customers, Naomi Finkel has some advice.
Knock it off!
Finkel, a Costco member and owner of Say It With Words in
Westlake Village, California, says brochures, signs, postcards, flyers
and other marketing tools are more effective if they’re simple.
Attempting to impress clients with complicated language often has
the opposite effect.
Finkel offers these simple tips for success.
➡ Don’t use three, five or 10 words when one will do. For example,
“when” is better than “in the event” and “now” beats “at this
moment in time.”
➡ Keep your paragraphs short, about five to six sentences. And limit
the length of your sentences.
RUBBERBALL PRODUCTIONS
➡ Every time you write a promotional piece, make believe you have
to pay by the word, just like in classified ads. When it comes to
writing right, keep it short and to the point.
➡ And what about those words that look like they came from a

BEHIND MANY successful
companies are a series of
stops and starts, steps and
missteps that the business
owner has survived. The
good news is that the rest
of us can learn from those
mistakes and succeed.
That’s the gist of Do
As I Say, Not As I
Did (Brown Books
Publishing Group,
2005), by Costco
member Carol
Frank. The book’s
subtitle sums it
up best: “Gaining
Wisdom in Busi-
ness Through
the Mistakes
of Highly
Successful People.”
Frank, of Dallas, asked
29 highly successful entrepreneurs to tell their secret
business horror stories
and how they overcame
them. She found these top
five mistakes.

Neglecting your best
employees. How well you
explain upcoming changes
is critical.
Trusting everyone.

dark side.
Ignoring your finances. In short, don’t let the
fox guard the henhouse.
In the end, says Frank,
we can say, “Whew, I’m
