HAPPY NEW YEAR! There’s no better time to make
a few positive changes in your life than the beginning of
a new year. Rather than the usual short-lived resolutions,
how about making some permanent changes this year?
You’ll find numerous articles and ads in this issue for
products and services that will help you improve your life.
First is our cover story on page 34 by doctors
Mehmet Oz and Mike Roizen, which will surely inspire
you to improve your physical health. If you are an Oprah
fan, you’ve probably seen Dr. Oz showing various organs
to illustrate the negative impact of smoking, excessive
drinking or obesity. Now the doctors have written a third book in their series of YOU
books, entitled YOU: On a Diet—The Owner’s Manual to Waist Management. The doctors
teach you how to diet smart, not hard, in their article and book.
We all know that long-term weight loss requires exercise in addition to diet. As Costco
member Joey Atlas explains in his article on page 43, exercise simply has to become a way
of life. He offers five essential steps to fitness to get you off to the right start.
You’ll find lots of other products to help you improve your life in this issue, in our
warehouses and on costco.com, including smoking-cessation products, blood-pressure
monitors, vitamins and nutritional supplements, fitness books and DVDs, and a wide
variety of exercise equipment such as weights, treadmills, elliptical trainers, recumbent
bikes, Bowflex gyms and scales.
Our new National Business Supplies Program on costco.com will help improve your
company’s bottom line. As the Buying Smart article on page 80 explains, you’ll save thousands
of dollars per year on basic business supplies such as pens, paper and Post-its, ink and toner,
technology products, cleaning and break-room supplies, and office furniture. In addition,
costco.com offers supplies for specialty businesses such as child care and education, catering
and restaurants, health and medical, salon and beauty, and more. Business-supplies catalogs
are available in our warehouses, or can be requested on costco.com.
Last but not least, our annual Wallet of Savings will help improve your personal financial
health. Watch your mailbox for our booklet of money-saving coupons that start on January
8, including hundreds of dollars in savings on that exercise equipment! C

I HAD JUST PUSHED back my plate and was savoring
the last bite of an excellent entrée. The luncheon speaker
was working his way to the heart of his subject.
The event was Costco’s annual International
Managers’ Meeting, a three-day gathering of the more
than 1,500 managers and assistant managers who run

Editor of The Costco Connection. buildings, it’s fair to say, they’ve seen it all and are generally ready for just about anything.
That was before Dr. Mehmet Oz (see this month’s cover story, page 34) started in
with his slides.
The first few were innocent enough, showing how food is masticated and begins its
journey of transformation through the body. But each graphic rapidly became more,
well, graphic, until it became clear we were witnessing no less than the formation of a
human turd. The noise of people shifting in their chairs, groaning and snickering ran
through the room.
Dessert was served.
And the lesson took immediate hold. If we cannot openly, intelligently and maturely
talk about our own bodies, how can we ever really take responsibility for our own health?
This is just one of the worthwhile messages embedded in the exclusive piece we asked
Dr. Oz and his colleague Dr. Michael Roizen to write for us this month. I hope it will be
helpful to readers who seek to know themselves … inside and out. C
