Ellen Schaefer, a fervent gardener, took an area she describes
as bleak and, inspired by influences of India, Vietnam and
Thailand, she, her sister and her husband designed a
harmonious environment of light, color and shade.

Third Place—Marty and Jan Njaa
Maple Valley, WA
With the help of a borrowed tractor, which Jan says
brought out the more primitive “I am man, I must dig”
side of her husband, the Njaas moved heaven and earth
(and about 7,000 pounds of paving stones). The result was
a large pond with koi and the occasional uninvited heron,
a grape arbor, a fire pit, and expanded deck.
