Costco supports our troops
A thank-you from
the troops at Camp
Loyalty in Iraq.
ABOUT 200 COSTCO employees who are-currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan are
out of sight, but definitely not out of mind.
Five times a year, Costco volunteers send care
packages to remind the troops that their
co-workers at home support them.
“We made the decision early on that we
wanted them to know they were not forgotten
and that we still cared about them,” says John
Matthews, Costco’s senior vice president of
human resources and risk management, and
a Navy veteran.
The packages, sent for Valentine’s Day,
Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Veterans
Day and Christmas, contain useful items not
readily available to the troops. That includes
Kirkland Signature™ Trail Mix, baby wipes,
shampoo, lotion, sun block, Q-tips, magazines, razors, hand-warmers, cookies and, at
Christmas, phone cards. Various departments
donate additional items such as towels, DVDs
and Xbox games.
“And lavender sachets,” John observes.
“They keep fleas away.”
Since 2001, packages have been sent to
hundreds of employees serving overseas. These
gifts are assembled by volunteers at Costco’s
corporate headquarters in Issaquah, Washington. Individual warehouses can also send their
own parcels if they have employees serving.
Included are company newsletters, messages
from other employees and a thank-you card
from Costco CEO Jim Sinegal.
Federal law guarantees that these employees will have their jobs when they return. In
addition, Costco continues their benefits, plus
their families’ coverage, until they can return to
work, and covers the gap between military pay
and what they earned as an employee. But the
company wanted to do even more.
Letters from the field prove the effort is
appreciated. Leo Baraoidan, a front-end supervisor for Costco’s Maui warehouse, wrote from
Balad air base in northern Iraq, “Receiving
your packages has been a blessing and makes
my tour out here in the desert much easier and
comfortable. It is a great feeling to know that
people back home understand and support
what I do here.”—Steve Fisher
