THE ADJUSTABLE wrench, often called the Crescent wrench, has been a toolbox essential for generations. Early motorists used them extensively to make repairs on the fly. The only tools Charles Lindbergh brought on his famous solo flight across the Atlantic in 1927 were pliers and a Crescent wrench. And in the early 1960s, astronauts on NASA’s Gemini missions carried a Crescent wrench with them into space.

Crescent Brand Tools (originally called the Crescent Tool Company) is celebrating its 100th anniversary. It’s no mistake that Lindbergh and NASA chose Crescent tools for their journeys. Since its inception, the company has been synonymous not only with the Crescent wrench, but with quality.

Company founder Karl Peterson believed that quality and reliability, rather than price, would create loyal customers. He selected highly skilled craftsmen for the hands-on manufacturing and experienced

During Crescent’s first 25 years, Peterson helped design nearly half of the plant’s machinery. The company remained a family-owned operation until 1960, when Marvin Peterson, Karl’s only son, sold it to a holding company.
