drive and all information on it. In fact, it is a
common utility used in fraud investigations
to recover data from hard drives that were
“reformatted” in an attempt to delete data
and destroy evidence.
The only safe way to [erase all informtion] is
to obtain a program that meets the Department
of Defense standards for securing data. This
is called DoD 5220 standard. These programs
not only delete all data from your hard drive,
but write over the hard drive at least seven
times with 1’s and 0’s. This repeated writing
makes it impossible for hackers to reconstruct
bits of data from your hard drive.
I would not donate any personal computer
without running such a program.

Praise for helping hands
Thank you for the article on lifestyle
assistance products [“Buying Smart: Helping
hands”] in the June issue. My mom just
passed away at 97, but we would have loved
having this information a few years ago. I also
appreciated the tone and the way you treated
the topic with dignity and mentioned seniors
with respect.
