However, oversize sofas or chaises with bulky
arms or large, chunky tables can be trickier.
Of course, the caveat is that if it’s a piece you
absolutely love, you’ll always find a space for it.
Also, look for opportunities to give new life to
old pieces—like turning
that great cabinet you
love into a kitchen island.
Finally, incorporate
pieces that can do dual
duty. “I look for things
that are both decorative
and functional,” Ryan says. She has two decorative hope chests that are lovely accent pieces,
but also hold her sweaters.
The various baskets she’s collected on her
travels also work hard: They serve as interesting accessories for shelves and tables, and when
she entertains they’re perfect for holding guest
silverware and napkins.
“I don’t need a bunch of room,” Ryan says.
“I just need flexibility.” C
