THERE’S AN ART to buying furniture at Costco. It involves timing and preparation.

Costco offers a limited number of furniture pieces throughout the year in the warehouses, but a wider selection is available in July and January. “These are ‘in-between’ periods for Costco, in terms of offering seasonal goods, and there’s extra room in the warehouses to bring in furniture,” explains Brett Jackson, case-goods buyer for Costco warehouses.

Even during these months, however, there’s a limited supply. Judging from the number of phone calls Costco’s furniture-buying team receives each time an item or collection sells out, it’s a good idea to come prepared to buy on the spot and transport your new furniture home.

“The pieces we carry are usually exclusive deals that you’ll only find at Costco, so if you find something you like, you won’t find the same furniture elsewhere and you will not find a better value,” Brett says.

Brett offers these tips for successful shopping: Review the furniture ads in The Connection. Mark the pieces you’re interested in and bring the magazine with you to the warehouse. If you don’t see an item on display, ask at the membership desk. An employee can key in the item number from the ad and tell you where the piece is located or if the shipment may have been delayed.

Also, before going shopping, measure the area you are furnishing and think about what will work with your home’s décor in terms of color, tone and style. Bring your notes, measurements and a tape measure, if necessary, with you to the warehouse.
