“Because we aren’t limited by physical space
restrictions online, we are able to carry a wide
selection of furniture in each category, all year
long,” says Kim Landdeck-Merris, costco.com
furniture buyer. “Because we are a high-volume
business, we are able to offer our members tremendous value in fine furniture.”
Furniture sold on costco.com is usually
advertised in the back section of The Connection
and is different than the items in the warehouse.
However, costco.com may carry additional pieces
to match the warehouses’ selection, such as
nightstands to match a bedroom set.
Kim says that accurately measuring the
space for which you are buying furniture is
critical when buying online because you won’t
have a chance to see the furniture to scale. Also,
if you’re buying upholstered furniture, you can
order a swatch of the fabric in which you’re
interested directly from the manufacturer
through costco.com.
All prices listed on costco.com include
shipping and handling. Most items are offered
with white-glove delivery, which means not
only will your purchases be delivered to your
home, they will be placed in the room of your
choice, unpackaged and assembled, and all
debris will be removed.—Will Fifield

ers, whether they’re in vases or potted, not
only brighten a room, but can have the same
effect on your mood.
Small touches such as putting out a new
tablecloth or rolling out a summery, floral
area rug are quick and easy fixes to add color
to and lighten up your home. Other ways to
summerize include:
■ Paint the walls a new color and
refresh the trim with white.
■ Renew couches and chairs with slipcovers in fresh summer colors.
■ Clean out the fireplace and fill it with
flowers or candles.
■ Add pieces with summery outdoor
themes, such as seashells or dragonflies, to
bring the outdoors inside.
■ Rearrange the furniture. In the winter it is nice to draw the furniture up close to
the fireplace, not only to enjoy fireside chats
but because it gives a snug look. Think about
moving it back against the walls during the
summer. —Stephanie E. Ponder

AT THE FIRST SIGN of cooler temperatures,
the word “winterize” forms on most people’s
lips—and the ensuing conversation often features insulation. Therefore, it seems only natural to “summerize” a home with the arrival of
warm weather—with a conversation focusing
on light and color.
Costco member Angela Beach, a
Southern California interior designer and
president of Beachwood Designs ( www.beach
wooddesigns.com), has several suggestions for
making over a home for the summer months.
“For the spring [and] summer seasons I
always suggest changing out winter’s darker,
heavier accent pillows and accessories for
much lighter, brighter colors,” says Beach.
“Accent pillows are fast, affordable and easy
to make yourself—if you want—and they
can also [add] super-bold colors without
being too much commitment.”
Beach suggests investing in glass accessories because they “give off a great light and
bounce in the summer months.” And flow-
