C oncentrated det ergents
a
OVER THE NEXT YEAR, most liquid laundry
detergents, including Kirkland SignatureTM
and Tide®, available at Costco nationwide, will
be changing to new concentrated formulas in
new, easier-to-use bottles. By concentrating
their detergents, manufacturers are able to provide the same cleaning power in a smaller
amount. You can wash the same number of
loads, but use just half as much detergent.
“It’s the latest step in our commitment to
bringing our members the best in laundry
innovations,” says Deb Belcourt, Costco buyer.
In addition, the new concentrated formulas help the environment in several ways.
First, they use less water to produce—up to 44
percent less in the case of 2X Ultra Tide
Liquid—which helps conserve this precious
resource. Second, the new concentrated-for-mula bottles are smaller, so they use less plastic
to make. And of course they can be recycled,
which saves landfill space.
Also, because they’re smaller, more bottles
can be shipped at the same time, which means
fewer trucks are needed for shipping nationwide. This reduces fuel usage, which in turn
reduces greenhouse gas emissions, a significant benefit to the environment.
“The new bottles also help our members
because they weigh significantly less, so they
are easier to handle, carry, pour and store than
the old bottles,” says Deb.
The new concentrated detergents will be
arriving in warehouses nationwide in two or
three phases (see illustration at right). Complete instructions on how much detergent to
use are included on the packaging. C
A new, more concentrated laundry
detergent, 2X Ultra Tide, was introduced at some Costco warehouses last
month. By April 2008, both the new
Tide and Kirkland Signature Ultra will
be available at all warehouses.
