Start the

GOOD NEWS FOR cereal lovers (and penny
pinchers): Costco has improved two breakfast
staples, raisin bran and oatmeal.
Recently introduced in the warehouses
is Kirkland Signature™ Organic Raisin Bran.
Along with being organic, the Costco product
has more raisins than national brands, less
sodium and sugar, and costs about a third
of a competing national-brand organic
raisin bran.
“Raisin bran is the workhorse of the
cereal category,” says Teresa Noonan, Costco
food buyer. “We knew we could make an
organic version and that we could improve
the overall quality.”
You’ll notice two big differences in
Kirkland Signature Organic Raisin Bran. One
is that the raisins have not been rolled in sugar
to sweeten the cereal. Instead, sweetness is provided by an abundance of naturally sweet raisins and by molasses and cane juice that are
added to the flakes. Second, the flakes won’t
get soggy in milk.
“We still deliver less sugar than the leading
brands,” says Teresa. “Plus, of course, our cereal
is made with all-organic ingredients.”
Also new is Kirkland Signature Organic
Instant Oatmeal, coming in November. It’s
lower in sugar and sodium than national
brands, but has more protein. “It packs a
punch,” says Teresa.
Many instant oatmeals turn too creamy
because the oats are crushed during manufacturing. The oats in Kirkland Signature Organic
Instant Oatmeal are gently rolled, which
means they hold up when hot water is added.

creamy,” says Teresa.
