Debate goes on
In response to the November
Debate, “Should government
legislate ‘appropriate’ dress codes?”
NO. If someone’s choice in clothing is tacky,
that’s their business. What’s next,
fining people whose shoes don ’t
match their belt or who wea r
black socks with shorts?
Hal Summer s

YES. The government already
regulates against public nudity.
We should certainly regulate
against the nauseating public
display of underwear.
Lenny Goldberg
Ashland, Oregon
NO. Do we want to become
the next Taliban? Arrest those
with “plumbers pants”? It
may be very poor taste, but
society will reward [or] disfavor those who
dress in a certain fashion. Legislation would
be wrong.
Joe Hilberman
Los Angeles, California
YES. It already does. It is just a matter of degree.
As long as the government doesn’t get into
fashion and only controls decency, then fine.

Odds and ends
Great company, nice story
Thank you so much for the great article
on Replacements Ltd. [“A great wall of china,”
November issue]. Now everyone will know
about their stock and great service. I have
used them for years, and most of the time
they have what I am looking for. If they don’t,
they keep my request on file and notify me
when a particular china pattern I am looking
for becomes available.

Scam me? Not this time.
The Costco Connection strikes again! I just
received the November issue and read the
David Horowitz article [“Consumer Connect-ion”] on Internet scams involving automobile
sales—specifically those posted on craigslist.
To my surprise and horror, I’d e-mailed a
craigslist posting this morning regarding a
Honda for sale. Tonight I received a reply
from a “military officer” living in the UK—
the supposed owner of the car for sale! He

requested payment through eBay. The details
mirrored, almost exactly, the scenario David
wrote about in his article! Like the friend
described in the column, I, too, was attracted
to an extremely well-priced vehicle. Not any
more! Many thanks to The Connection and to
David Horowitz for a timely article!

Dropout dilemma
I was excited to see
the cover story [“Our
kids, our future”] of your
October issue. The article
discusses the current
plight of high school
dropouts in America and
what we can do to help
them. However, after I saw
t he photo on the table of
c ontents and the subse-q uent photos in the story, I
was disturbed.
The photos imply that
this problem is strictly
focused on the African-American population.
I am sure that Mr. Milliken did not intend for
this story to be specifically directed at African-
Americans, yet no other races are pictured.
Although the percentage of African-
American dropouts is up 10 percent, that
number is only 4 percent higher than that of
whites and 12 percent lower than the Hispanic
population. Yet no other race is pictured in
this article. I feel that this story stereotypes
African-Americans as the only race with this
dropout issue, which is just not true.

The dropout epidemic indeed covers all races.
No implication to the contrary was intended
when The Connection designed the story.—Ed
