IN LATE August, when people are clinging to the last bits of summer, a most
unusual sight appears in Costco: Christmas decorations, porcelain Santas and
other holiday items—greens and reds in a season of yellow and brown. About
as useful, it would seem, as gardening tools in December or a summer dress
in January.
