noticed an area of blue ice. “The color of the ice
attracted me. Then I noticed the hole in it. I
thought, since I had come with 140 other photographers, that nearly everyone would have
already taken photos from this spot. But there
were no footprints,” he says.
Unfortunately, there were no penguins
around either. Still, Szafranski carefully set up
his camera for what he believed would be a
nice landscape photo, using a wide-angle lens.
Then, as he readied his shot, a small group
of emperor penguins waddled into the scene.
“I could have been there for a week and
not seen any penguins,” says Szafranski. “It was
pure luck.” For his third-place photo, Szafranski
will receive a $500 Costco Cash card.
