Debate goes on
BLINKSTOCK
In response to the March Debate,
“Should our medical records be
centralized in electronic databases?”
NO. Too many times Social Security numbers, credit-card numbers and other digitally stored information is stolen for me to
trust doing this now.

YES. It is way too easy now for a person to
have multiple prescriptions from different
doctors. This is dangerous for anyone not
fully “with it” and costly to insurance companies and Medicare. The risk of inappropriate
use is no worse than the threat of having credit
information stolen, especially since it is now
easily obtained for a small fee.

Primary colors
Thank you for holding a debate on
whether there should be a national primary
[in the February issue]. I had never heard the
proposal of rotating regional presidential
primaries described by Kentucky Secretary of
State Trey Grayson and found it very interesting. Thanks for m aking your readers aware
of this alternativ e,
which sounds muc h
more fair and incl u-
sive than the curre nt
system. I’m tired of
hearing the pund its
announce after Iow a
and New Hampshi re
that it’s all over. M akes the rest of us feel like it
just isn’t worth the effort to get out and vote.

Odds and ends
World market
In your February issue, one of the articles
[Buying Smart: “Costco’s world-class pro-duce”] was well received by my husband and
me. We have always been reticent to purchase foods from foreign countries, not
knowing if toxic sprays and fertilizers are
used in production. We now feel assured that
Costco foods are safe to consume. We are
regular customers and are so thankful we can
buy safe produce at your warehouses.

Dog leashes demystified
What a cover [February issue]! Those
two beautiful animals in choke collars. This
is not a good advertisement for Michael
Maritzen or his company. Choke collars are
just plain cruel.
William H. Silcox
Incline Village, Nevada
Michael Maritzen responds:
I received several comments of concern
over the collars I used with the dogs in the
photo on the February cover of The Costco
Connection. The cha ins
I used were provided by
the dogs’ owner. Part of of
Fetch! Pet Care’s pr o-
cess ensures that w e
use the leashes, collar s
and other tools that
are provided by our
clients since these
are what the pets
are already accustomed to.
The use of only a
plain buckle collar does not make
one owner kinder tha n one who uses a prong
or snap-and-release c ollar. It”s how the collar
is used and how the dogs have been trained
that makes one type of collar better than
another in each individual case.
All dog owners should receive training on
the proper use of any type of collar since most
new and inexperienced dog owners have a
tendency to fight for control and thus can cause
an inappropriate response from the dog, including the potential for harm.
