COSTCO HAS DEVELOPED three new environmentally friendly Kirkland Signature™ cleaning products—Laundry Detergent, Liquid Dish Soap and Multipurpose Cleaner— that set a new standard in eco-friendliness for Costco members.

These new products feature biodegradable cleaning agents and plant-based formulas; contain no phosphates, dyes, optical brighteners or bleaches; are safe for septic systems; and are not animal tested.

“We built these environmentally friendly products without performance tradeoffs, so the members will be able to use these products and be green,” says Costco buyer Deb Belcourt.

For example, the new Kirkland Signature Laundry Detergent was developed specifically from the ground up as an ecologically friendly detergent. That means the product and packaging formulations were all designed from scratch to use not only the most environmentally friendly ingredients, but also the most efficient manufacturing and distribution processes.

“Some items make green claims around

one attribute yet contain other ingredients which may not be the most environmentally desirable,” says Deb. “Few items are designed to really minimize the carbon footprint throughout the product life cycle.”

The concept of green at Costco refers not only to the environment, but also to money. While the new Kirkland Signature products clean and stay eco-friendly, they also provide great value, according to Deb.

The environmentally friendly Kirkland Signature Laundry Detergent, at 110 wash loads, yields a per-wash cost of less than 12 cents, while other regular and environmentally safe detergents sold in most retail and natural stores typically cost 20 to 44 cents per wash load.

costs 5. 4 cents per ounce; the detergent sold in most grocery and natural stores costs 13 to 36 cents per ounce.

The environmentally friendly 202-ounce Kirkland Signature Multipurpose Cleaner (a 32-ounce spray bottle with a 170-ounce refill) is less than 4 cents per ounce, while other general-purpose cleaners sell for 13 to 27 cents per ounce.

The new Kirkland Signature Laundry Detergent replaces Wintree in about 180 U.S. locations. The Kirkland Signature Liquid Dish Detergent replaces the 135-ounce Kirkland Signature Liquid Dish Soap. The Kirkland Signature Multi-Purpose Cleaner replaces other branded multipurpose cleaners sold by Costco.
