Food storage solutions
help save food and money
EVERYTHING COSTS MORE these days.
Gasoline is getting the headlines, but the
prices of all our staple goods are going up as
well. Now, more than ever, it’s important to
squeeze the most value out of everything you
buy. Obviously, I believe that shopping at
Costco is a great start. But if you’re not taking
care to preserve your food purchases, all that
money you’ve saved is going right into the
Costco buyer Steve Barkley shares,
“According to a 2004 University of Arizona
study, the cost of wasted food for a family of
four in the U.S. adds up to about $600 a year,
based on food that spoils in the refrigerator
The solution lies in keeping foods at the
correct temperature and storing them properly. Lucky for us, Costco offers products
suited for every food storage need. Let’s start
with the basics, and work our way up.
Wrapping it up
A simple, low-tech approach is the wraps
and baggies category.
Plastic wrap. Costco’s upgraded and co-branded Kirkland Signature™ Stretch-Tite®
plastic covering feels more substantial than
other brands and clings beautifully to plastic,
glass and metal. A welcome improvement is
the choice of two cutters, slide and serrated
edge, offered in each box. There’s also an
additional 500 square feet of wrap in the two-pack. Prices show at least a 25 percent savings
over 2005 prices.
Foiled again. Reynolds Wrap® standard
and heavy-duty aluminum foil withstands
heat up to 650 degrees and cold to minus 40.
Meeting all U.S. Food and Drug Administration requirements for direct contact with
food, the foil is wonderful for freezer-to-oven
casseroles, packet cooking, turkey and pie
tents, easy-cleanup broiler pan lining and
even last-minute gift wrapping. Costco’s oversize 500-square-foot two-pack of standard
foil is a welcome relief from the measly
25-square-foot rolls found in grocery stores.
Zip bags. Costco offers Ziploc® Storage
Bags in double-zipper freezer gallons and
quarts, plus sandwich bags and easy-to-use
EZ Zipper freezer quarts. All Ziploc bags feature reusable, transparent, durable plastic
that’s especially designed for the harsh freezer
