late air) filtration system removes 99.97 percent of dust, allergens and small particles
and may be best in this case. Some systems
feature lifetime filters that can be washed
and reinserted.
Do you need an ergonomic or lightweight cleaner?
Lightweight uprights are particularly appealing to seniors, as are vacuums with ergonomic features, such as easy-to-reach switches
and self-propulsion.
You might also want to consider a robotic
cleaner, which can be programmed to clean
while you’re away. (Not to mention provide
entertainment for your pets.)
What are the annual operating costs
for the vacuum?
Consider the cost of bags, belts and filters,
which may require frequent changing.
Take all these questions into account to be
sure you’re getting the right cleaner. C
Don’t replace if
it’s not broken
ACCORDING TO SHANNON Axthelm,
Costco’s small-electrics buyer, “The best way
for your
home
to keep vacuums in tiptop shape is to follow
the manufacturer’s advice for maintenance.”
Here are some tips to keep your cleaner functioning properly.
For a bag vacuum, change the bag
monthly. Check more often if your home
is large or if you have children, a lot of foot
traffic or pets. Fine dust and debris reduce
the filtration through the bag, which requires
changing the bag more often. For bagless,
empty the dust cup after each use.
Check the brush roll after each use to
make sure it’s free of hair and debris.
Change the belts on the vacuum every
six months. Belts are made of rubber and will
stretch and wear out. The tighter or newer the
belt, the better the vacuum will perform.
Refer to your owner’s manual for detailed instructions on how to replace the belt.
Replace HEPA filters every six months
to maintain peak filtration. Washable filters, available on some cleaners, should be
cleaned about every eight weeks. Make sure
it’s dry before placing it in the vacuum.
Don’t ignore strange noises or a burning odor. Three reasons for added noise are a
broken fan blade, a broken belt or an obstruction in the brush bar area. A burning odor
could be a broken belt, a power cord or something else caught under the vacuum. Ignoring
these can lead to more problems. C
