Johnson as a Superman-type character, with
Robert and Ted Kennedy as Bobman and
Teddy. It hit the bestseller list, and even Walter
Cronkite interviewed Tallarico for his work
on it.
His experience with The Great Society
Comic Book showed Tallarico that working on
books paid well, and he shifted his career
focus. He says the transition from comic books
to books was easy: “It’s a little different style
of art, but you’re still telling a story visually.”
Since then he’s illustrated more than 1,000
kids’ books, including the I Can Draw series,
Where Are They? series and several more,
including the Giant Search & Find Pads.
Tallarico, 77, says he gets a lot
of feedback about the children’s
books he’s illustrated, something
he never experienced with his
work on comic books. “It makes
up for a lot,” he says.
He says that teachers and parents like the Search & Find titles
because small children can focus on
looking for the images, while older
children can read the words and
practice their letter recognition and reading
skills. He adds he’s also heard from parents
of autistic children
who say the books
help focus their children. Adults with
elderly parents say
they’ve also been a hit
with seniors, who use
the search-and-find exercise
to keep their minds active.
Tallarico keeps himself busy drawing
every day, whether he has a work assignment
or free time on his hands. After all of these
years, and all of the good feedback, Tallarico
still finds his work as an illustrator rewarding.
“It’s very satisfying to keep adding to the
image,” he explains. “It’s
really fun. Not many people can say that about their
work.” C
