Custom holiday cheer
Photos make unique greetings and gifts
COSTCO’S 1-HOUR Photo centers have
brought more value to a perennial favorite—
the photo holiday card. This year the cards are
50 percent bigger, and the price has come
down. Yet, even with the size change, a first-class postage stamp will still do
the job.
The size change came with a
complete redesign of the card series,
which now offers these choices:
s 20 designs available from
1-Hour Photo: 14 single-image
designs, three multi-image
designs and three Disney designs
s 20 additional designs from the
Photo Center on costco.com,
for warehouse pickup only
The price for 50 cards, including
envelopes, is $14.99. Additional sets
of 25 cards are available for $5.99,
only at the time of the original order.
For in-person orders, just bring
your favorite photo (digital media card, CD,
negative or APS cartridge) to any 1-Hour
Photo location. For online orders, go to
costco.com and click on “Photo.”
Upgrade memories to DVD
Costco members are enthusiastic about
1-Hour Photo’s new service, which converts
old movies, videos and slides to DVD. It’s a
great way to dust off old, often forgotten
memories that might be stored in some
archaic format that’s not so easy to access
anymore, and the DVDs are great holiday
gifts for family and friends.
Howard Lass of Brooklyn, New York,
says that the 50-year-old movies he had converted brought tears to his eyes. “It’s a great
gift to give someone,” he says, “because you
can recapture things that haven’t been seen
in years. They give you two copies—I gave
one to my daughter,
with footage of her
growing up. She
showed it to her children, and they couldn’t
believe that it was
their mother.”
Mariann Kelly of
Vancouver, Washington, is really impressed
by the convenience o f
the format. “With a
VHS tape, it takes for -
ever to find somethin g
you’re looking for,” sh e
tells The Connection . “But these DVDs ar e
so convenient to look at on a TV or the com -
puter, and I love the way the cover of the cas e
shows little snapshots to guide you to the par t
of the program you want.”
Media that can be transferred to DVD
include 8 mm, Super 8 mm and 16 mm movi e
film;VHS,S-VHS,VHS-C,8mm,Hi8,Digital8 ,
MiniDV and Betamax videotape formats; an d
35 mm slides (cardboard or plastic mounts ).
The finished DVD takes three to fou r
weeks. November 20 is the submission dead -
line to allow for holiday delivery, with rus h
service available up to December 3.

FOR THIS HOLIDAY season, the online
Costco Photo Center is loaded with great
gift items. One of my favorites is PhotoBooks from MyPublisher. The process for
creating a coffee-table photobook is simple
and easy: Drag and drop photos, add titles
or captions and preview what it will look
like. You can choose among eight themes
and more than 200 page layouts.
Two other easy-to-design gift items:
photo handbags and throws.
Photo handbags, a great way to keep
your memories at your side, are available in
five styles. You can quickly combine your
favorite photo with
a bag style. Photo
throws can commemorate someone
special. Oversize
and made of 100
percent cotton, these
throws are durable
and useful against
the chill of winter.
There are other
gift items to consider from the Photo
Center, including
calendars, mouse
pads and folded cards.
Go to costco.com, click on “Photo”
and bookmark that page for special-
o ccasion gift shopping.
In minutes you can create your own
photo handbag (top) or coffee-table
book, great gifts for any occasion.
