Testing is key
Top-quality tables are classified as commercial grade. To earn this
classification, they must meet or exceed safety and performance standards
established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the
Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturer’s Association (BIFMA).
The standards, developed by the BIFMA Engineering Committee, involve
seven tests that ensure table strength and functionality.
These standards are intended to provide manufacturers, specifiers and
users with a common basis for evaluating safety, durability and the structural
adequacy of the specified furniture, independent of construction materials.
The standards define specific tests, laboratory equipment to be used, the
test conditions and the minimum acceptance levels to be used in evaluating
these products.
Examples of the tests include applying a 300-pound concentrated load to
the center of the table span for 15 minutes, applying a 200-pound concentrated
load to the center of the table span for one hour and applying a 200-pound
load for a few seconds—repeated through 20,000 cycles.
To test operational safety, leading manufacturers subject their furniture
to tests established by the American Society for Testing and Materials. These
tests look at pinch points and exposed sharp edges.
Some manufacturers have developed their own tests to ensure real-world
durability. These include dropping heavy weights ( 200 pounds or more) onto
the tables and dropping the desks onto their corners from certain heights to
ensure against table damage during transport.
As you can see, there is more to a table than just four legs and a tabletop.
Look closely and you’ll be happy with your purchase for years to come. A
After initial molding, excess plastic is
trimmed to meet size specifications.
Table legs are precision welded for
strength during the assembly process.
Raw steel coil is converted into table
legs and other metal parts.
