IF GEORGE EASTMAN was its founder, why is Kodak the name of the
famous camera and film company?
The company, founded in 1880, was in fact initially known as the
Eastman Dry Plate Company. But while getting ready to introduce the
first simple roll camera, Eastman—ever aware of the power of image and
advertising—wanted a name that was memorable. So he made one up.
He liked the letter K—“a strong and incisive sort of letter.” He experi-
mented with various combinations until he came up with Kodak. It was
short, unlikely to be mispronounced and unique.
The plan worked. The original Kodak camera and its successors,
including the Brownie, are among the most popular products in the world.
Eastman, by the way, was a high school dropout. A
