BAD NEWS FOR MODERN cubicle-farm dwellers: According to Wikipedia,
the typical adult male peasant in the UK in the 13th century put in some
1,620 hours each year on the job. Today, the average worker in the United
States logs some 2,000 hours each year on the job. This means that despite
all our computers, phones, PDAs and other devices meant to save time,
those cow-milking peasants had more leisure hours than we do today.
No figures are available on what they actually did with all that extra
time, but one thing is clear: They weren’t watching TV. According to AC
Nielsen, the average American watches more than four hours of TV each
day— 28 hours per week. That means that a 65-year-old has spent nine years
glued to the tube. Our point: Get out and do something leisurely! A
