more fun than a picnic? Whether you pick up a rotisserie chicken and a salad
at your local Costco and head to the nearest park or bring burgers to grill at the

• When packing, use two coolers. Pre-chill the coolers, if you have time.
Keep beverages and frequently used foods in one cooler and perishable
foods, such as meats, in the other. The frequent opening of the beverage
cooler can prevent foods from staying well chilled.
• On your way to the picnic site, put your cooler inside the air-conditioned
car rather than in the hot trunk. Once you’re there, place the cooler in the
shade and keep the lid closed.
• Bring a first-aid kit, mosquito repellent, sunscreen and plenty of games and
activities, such as Frisbees, decks of cards and so on, for family fun.
• Bring three trash bags to clean up after the picnic. Put recyclable cans and
bottles in one bag. If your community recycles food waste, use the second
bag for that, but remember: no meat or fish scraps; only vegetables, fruits,
paper towels, napkins, etc. All other trash goes in the third bag.
• Keep your picnic supplies list on your computer, with a copy in your picnic
basket, and you’ll be ready to go at a moment’s notice. Make sure to note
anything you wish you’d brought along and add it to your list for the next
