DAD GOT A DIGITAL CAMERA for his birthday, and it came with a 2 GB
memory card. He’s taken hundreds of photos that he proudly exhibits on the
tiny camera display—pictures of the grandkids, his new boat, the raccoon on

His pictures are surprisingly well done, probably because his camera is
so easy to use and has so many foolproof features. But so far, all those photos

haven’t made the leap off the memory card, here’s a comprehensive guide to
what can be done with those digital photos.
Photos to computer
The camera memory card is not intended for long-term photo storage,
and the space on the memory card needs to be free for acquiring new photos.
Your computer, not your camera, should serve as the central repository for
your digital photos. That’s also where you can organize, edit, share via e-mail
and print your photos.
There are some simple methods for moving digital photos off your
camera and onto your computer.
• Digital cameras typically come with a dedicated cord for transferring photos
from the camera to your computer via a USB connection. The only drawback
with this method is the drain on the camera battery during the transfer.
• You can buy a computer peripheral device called a card reader. Simply take
the memory card from the camera and insert it in the card reader. Readers
are available that take several different memory card formats.
• Many computer printers have dedicated slots for memory cards. These
printers allow you to print directly from the memory card, or to download
the card contents to the computer as you would with a card reader.
Once the photos are on your computer, you can organize them into dif ferent
folders, work with photo-management and photo-editing software programs
and send photos as e-mail attachments to family and friends.
