“HOME” IS ONE OF THE MOST ingrained concepts in our lives. For start-
ers, it’s where the heart is. When we’re nearing the end of a project, we’re
on the home stretch. Baseball players hit home runs.
Perhaps most resonant is the phrase “home, sweet home!” It comes
from a song that was adapted from the 1823 opera Clari, the Maid of Milan.
Its opening lines are still famous:
Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam,
Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home.
And, of course, there is no place like home. That’s what Dorothy said
as she clicked her heels at the end of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. Sharp
ears will recognize the melody that’s playing in the background: “Home!
Sweet Home!” A
