make to Costco continues to impress me. [I]
see the wide variety of healthy fruit and vegetable products, whole grains, nuts, beans/soy
foods and other plant foods and health food
products (including nutritional supplements)
being made available to your customers at
reasonable prices. Not to mention all the fit-ness/exercise supplies and wellness-oriented
books and DVDs. Like David Murdock,
Costco is a real leader in nutrition and wellness to the communities it serves.

YES. It would be a shame to
think that we are the absolute
best that God could create.

NO. I am still waiting for Earth life to display

Healthy balance of articles
I wanted to thank you for the excellent
articles in the January 2009 Costco Connection.
I want to make sure that everyone I know
takes the time to read about David Murdock’s
accomplishments (page 30), the Health
roundup (page 36) and the “toast to better
health” (page 39), and there are others that I
liked. All are very inspiring.

YES. The absence of proof does not constitute the proof of absence. We have been
radiating signals for only slightly over a century, so such signals would be detectable in
a sphere only just over 100 light-years in
diameter. This is only about one-tenth of 1
percent of the diameter of our own galaxy,
and a smaller percentage still of the volume
of the galaxy, since it isn’t spherical, we
aren’t near the center and stars are not
evenly distributed. I’ve no doubt that they’re
out there, and that in a few tens of centuries
we will meet them.
Odds and ends
Now we’re cookin’
Being one of the many thousands of shoppers who found my way to my local Costco on
“Black Friday,” I must say that the day was
brightened by being gifted a copy of In the
Kitchen The Costco Way as I entered the store
in Concord, California.
Both my lovely spouse and I cook, and are
currently on a lifestyle-changing diet to release
many unnecessary pounds. As Ralph Waldo
Emerson said, getting our “bloated nothingness” out of the way. Besides the scrumptious
desserts, which we choose not to have, we have
found a number of recipes that conform to
our diet. Our copy of the book now looks like
a porcupine thanks to all of the recipes we
have tabbed for future dining inspiration.
Please thank those responsible at Costco
for this fun holiday gift.

NO. The universe is a pretty hostile place and
the coincidences resulting in Earth are really a
long shot. I think the coefficients in the
famous equation are a lot smaller than
thought. But more importantly, so what? I
doubt we could communicate or have any
shared values anyway. Where is the dialogue

Committed to well-being
As a professional nutritionist, I was
delighted to read your in-depth article on Mr.
David Murdock [“Let’s eat right!,” January
2009]. I believe that Mr. Murdock should be
commended for his outstanding support of
nutrition and health research as well as his
dedication to the promotion of a diet focused
on healthy fruits and vegetables. I admire the
dedicated example he sets in what he does
through health science research, nutrition
education, operating a health and longevity
center, and running the world’s largest producer of fresh fruits and vegetables.
I am glad to see Costco working with

products to Costco customers. Each visit I
