Sustainable romance
GIVING ROSES ON Valentine’s Day is a great tradition. Costco
buyers Ken Hackman and Kevin Gleason want to start a new
tradition: the gift of Rainforest Alliance–certified roses.
Rainforest Alliance (RA) is an organization that sets
standards for sustainability and promotes the well-being of
workers and their communities. RA and its partners in the
Sustainable Agriculture Network have developed certification
standards for responsible flower and fern farm management.
As of June 15, 2008, all roses purchased from South Amer-
ica by Costco and sold in warehouses are RA certified. “We
are the first retailer in the world to do this,” says Kevin,
“and Costco not only has the best value in the market
on roses, but is the only retailer offering 100 percent
Rainforest Alliance–certified roses for Valentine’s Day.”
