Lush Life, by Richard Price. Richard Price is one of the great American crime writers. He’s written screenplays (The Color of Money) and worked on TV series (The Wire). He’s also been writing novels for more than 30 years. Each new title published feels just as fresh as, if not fresher than, the last.

In Lush Life, Price tells the story of two Lower East Sides. One is filled with excess and the other with hardship. When a young hipster is killed on the streets, the crime is felt throughout the city.

As fans of Price have come to expect, the dialogue is hip and vibrant, resulting in the feeling that you’ve not so much read the book as eavesdropped on the characters’ lives.

FRANCE FREEMAN

Just as Julia is obsessed with 10-year-old Sarah in the book, I found myself haunted by both the young girl and the woman determined to keep the memory of Sarah—and all of the children affected by the “Vel d’ Hiv” roundup—alive.—SR

Sarah’s Key, by Tatiana de Rosnay. De Rosnay’s debut novel, Sarah’s Key, is quite a find. The story is told in two voices. First there’s 10-year-old Sarah in Paris in 1942, whose family is rounded up and sent away. Before leaving the family apartment she locks her little brother in a cupboard for safety and promises to return.

The second voice belongs to Julia Jarmond,

Williams-Sonoma Family Meals: Creating Traditions in the Kitchen, by Maria Helm Sinskey. Some of my favorite childhood memories involve food. I loved helping out in the kitchen, and even better was the time spent laughing and talking with my family long after we’d taken our last bites. Sadly, as we all got older that family time slipped away, and I’ve been looking for ways to recapture those times.
