“Hero of
WHEN CAPTAIN CHESLEY Sullenberger,
his wife, Lorrie, and daughters, Kate and Kelly,
stopped in to shop at the Costco in Danville,
California, on February 3, they were surprised
to see a banner honoring the Costco member
hanging inside the store entrance.
Sullenberger is being called the “Hero of
the Hudson” since he and his flight crew successfully landed a jet on the Hudson River in
January, despite failed engines. Amazingly, all
155 passengers and crew members survived,
with no serious injuries. The heroic landing
made the news globally.
Lorrie Sullenberger remarked at a local
celebration that she and her husband have
been overwhelmed by the outpouring of
affection that has come by way of letters and
e-mail messages from around the world since
the river landing.

Sullenberger was invited to President
Barack Obama’s inauguration and the Super
Bowl, interviewed on CBS’s
60 Minutes and
given a welcome-home gathering by thousands on Danville’s Town Green.
Acclaimed internationally, Sullenberger
was honored to also be acknowledged at the
Danville warehouse where he regularly shops.
(His family has lived in Danville for 13 years.)
While there, he was quoted as saying he loves
Costco and has been a member for 24 years.
Sullenberger asked if he might sign the
banner. Night manager Steve Agosto raised
him up on a scissor lift so he could sign it with
the nickname that has become so famous in
the past few months, “Sully.”
Sullenberger will be given an additional
tribute soon, when he will be presented with
the banner, signed by 82 Costco employees.
