Debate goes on
In response to the March Debate,
“Should animals have the same
rights as humans?”
NO. The end result will be no domestic animals, no service animals, no family pets and
the spread of disease. Humans would have no
new drugs to fight disease, and it is not an
unreasonable assumption that the plague
(which still exists) would decimate human
populations. Is that what those who think animals should have human rights really want?

YES. Mr. Martosko (the “No” debate essayist)
knows that the horrors of vivisection and
experiments on animals are unspeakably
cruel and painful for its victims. The ASPCA
slogan “We Are Their Voice” is so accurate: It
is up to the human race to have compassion
for all animals and protect them from suffering in the name of greed.

We dropped off one reel

had just been filmed today. This is a real family

Hot dogs around the world
I have made it my mission in life to find
the world’s best hot dog. I’m lucky enough to
have traveled around the world, and if there’s
a hot dog stand, it is my duty to try it. I’ve had
hot dogs everywhere from Prague to New
Zealand, and I have yet to find a hot dog better than the one at Costco; it’s the perfect ratio
of dog to bun, and the self-serve condiment
bar assures me I can get all the onions my
heart desires. The free-refill 20-ounce drink is
just the icing on the cake.

Missed photo op
I wanted to express my dismay at your
choice for the International Grand Prize winner in the 2008 Costco Photo Contest. As a
physician and mother, I was shocked that a
person smoking was chosen as a winning
example of someone’s “best shot.” I understood the story behind the photo; however,
the photo does not exemplify the values we
try to teach our children and patients.

We received several comments about this
year’s photo contest winner. However, this picture of a smoker’s grizzled, wrinkled face and
hand is likely to be more of an admonition than
a stimulation to any youngster (or adult) who
might be tempted to try smoking.—Ed.
