HAWAII IS AN ALMOST flawless
destination. It’s enchanting, multicultural and it is
nature at its most divine.
Given its reputation as such a popular
destination, the first time I went to Hawaii, I
was expecting to be lost in a crush of tourists.
But despite the fact that more than 7 million
visit the islands every year, I discovered on
that first and ensuing visits it’s not only easy
to find lots to keep you entertained, it’s also
really pretty easy to find peace and quiet—
your own private corner of Hawaii. And of
the main islands to choose from (Hawaii,
Kauai, Maui or Oahu) you can tailor your
vacation to fit whatever mood you’re in.
Maui
Maui consistently ranks as one of the
world’s best, most romantic islands and it’s
easy to understand why. The island brings
together miles of glorious beaches, fantastic
cuisine, world-class resorts and some of the
world’s best windsurfing, whale watching,
snorkeling and diving. Hiking is unsurpassed,
with Haleakala National Park offering the
unique experience of taking in the dramatic
views from the rim of its massive 7½-mile-
long, 2½-mile-wide and ½-mile deep surface.

Hawaii
It’s not called the Big Island for nothing.
Bigger than all the other islands combined,
with two of the earth’s largest volcanoes, Hawaii
contains nearly every one of earth’s ecological
zones, offering white-sand beaches, coral reefs
for snorkel and scuba, rangelands, rain forests
and mountains. There are well-preserved cultural sites, and a wide variety of cities and
towns, big and small, in which to hang out and
savor some of the flavor of the real Hawaii.
Kauai
Peaceful, quiet, lush and rural Kauai, the
first Hawaiian island I ever visited, is nature at
its best, with dense rain forests on the north
side and the Grand Canyon–esque Waimea
Canyon on its southern face. Combine that
with the west side’s Na Pali Coast trail and
beautiful scalloped bays (including Hanalei
Bay, which was just selected No. 1 on “Dr.
Beach” Stephen P. Leatherman’s 2009 list of
top 10 beaches) and you’ll understand why
this island is a mecca for hikers and kayakers,
snorkelers and surfers—and outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes.
Oahu
As the state’s center of government and
culture, Oahu is a happy combination of
urban living, natural beauty and rural community. The south shore is home to the urban
activity of Honolulu, the legendary beaches of
Waikiki and the dramatic views from Diamond
Head Crater. The north shore is a step back to
a slower pace, where smaller towns and venues
offer the chance to watch the wave riders at
Sunset Beach, swim with sea turtles at Kailua
Beach Park and experience a sense of an older,
more laid-back Hawaii.
Whichever island calls to you (and they
will call to you), you can expect a unique experience, jaw-dropping landscapes and vistas,
outstanding dining, world-class golfing and a
wide variety of accommodations, all in the
warm embrace of the Polynesian experience.
