a few souvenir items that mentioned her newfound favorite fictional characters. “I recall a sense of heartbreak,” Root tells The Connection. “It was like goingto Disneyland and finding out there are no characters.” Having spotted an empty storefront on the town’s main street, Root decided to open a souvenir shop, and in less than two months the store was open. The mother of five left behind an 18-year job as a state social worker to pursue her dream job. After realizing she was losing business because the small store couldn’t accommo- date as many people as showed up, she found a larger location, just half a block south, and opened the second store in September 2009. Root worked with an artist to create trees, col- umns and a small bridge to capture the feel of La Push, Forks and Volterra (a city in Italy home to a vampire clan that sets the rules for the vampire world) within the store. Root, who’s read the series 17 times, says he loves the fact that every day she gets to “talk to someone new about something
I love.” For that reason, she says, she runs the
business not as a business owner, but as a fan,
even opening the store by appointment if
someone shows up outside business hours.
She explains, “I want people to leave
[Forks] feeling they got the experience they
