I HAVE BEEN away from work for a number of weeks to
tend to some medical issues. The copy of the magazine
you are holding in your hands or reading on your screen
is the first in 20 years in which I was not involved in the
daily editing process. But I was able to get a look at the
proof of the issue before it went to press so that I could
put in my two cents. As I went through the proof, I realized that, for the first time, I was experiencing the magazine the way our readers do—each story hitting me out
of the blue, as it were, not as a piece we had been working on for days or weeks or even months.
Here are a few observations from this fresh perspective.
• The Costco Connection is chock-full of practical advice. Columnists explain how
to keep computer data safe, how to protect homes and businesses against potential
flood damage and what novel is a good bet for a good read.
• The magazine’s writers get to the point, make the point and then get out. Articles
are right-sized, you might say.
• Although a good share of the articles are about products or services Costco is
selling, they tend to be informative and educational more than loud and hyperbolic.
A good case in point is Will Fifield’s cover story on Costco’s Tire Centers.
• Another aspect of Will’s article struck me as a “first-time” reader: the way he
opened the piece with an anecdote about his son. Thanks to this personal glimpse,
along with the Buyer’s Pick product recommendations, Pat Volchok’s in-depth hands-on product reviews, letters from our readers and our Member Connection department
on the last page of the magazine, I came away feeling that there are some wonderful,
interesting people who work and shop at Costco.
And, of course, that is true.
To everyone who took part in creating this issue of The Costco Connection in my
absence, I want to say, “Bravo!” C
