Judges should be held
accountable to the public. My performance is
reviewed where I work.
Judges should be held
to that reasonable practice.
Should judges
Lisa Morello
Ipswich, MA
be elected?
NO
fedeRAL JudGeS ARe appointed for life, but that’s not the
case at the state level when it comes to filling judgeships.
In many states, state judges are appointed by the governor;
while in others, judges run for election in partisan races.
Those who support the policy of electing judges say that
partisan elections enhance the quality of democracy and
keep judges accountable to the public. Critics argue that
putting judges in a position where they have to campaign
against opponents and collect campaign contributions can
create serious conflicts of interest and does not allow
voters to make informed decisions. What do you think?
