SUMMER IS THE SEASON for outdoor cooking and
entertaining. If your dad or husband likes to barbecue,
you’ll want to check out the great Father’s Day grilling
gifts available this month in our warehouses and on
Costco.com. Barbecue guru Steven Raichlen shares his
tips, along with a few of his favorite recipes, on page 30.
His new book, Planet Barbecue!: 309 Recipes, 60 Countries
may make the perfect gift for your dad.
What would a barbecue be without chicken?
Consumer reporter Pat Volchok checks out the new
Kirkland Signature™ frozen chicken products in the article
on page 74. As with all Kirkland Signature products, we
have upgraded the quality of our frozen chicken and standardized the specifications.
Only a select few suppliers meet our requirements, and they are held closely accountable.
Best of all, you’ll save money and get better-quality chicken. You may also want to
try the Kirkland Signature rub and seasonings on your grilled meats.
In the warehouses and on Costco.com, you’ll find lots of other gifts for dads and
grads, in addition to outdoor furniture, toys, garden tools and accessories to help you
make the most of summer. Beginning after page 32, be sure to check out the items
available only on Costco.com for delivery direct to your door.
A beautiful gift is the new series Life, now available in both standard DVD and
Blu-ray formats. Years in the making, produced by the same talented folks who
brought us Planet Earth, and narrated by Oprah Winfrey (or David Attenborough in
the BBC version), Life offers a fascinating look at the animals that share our planet;
find out more in the story on page 36. We are also offering instant savings this month
(pages 34 to 35) on a selection of movies, TV shows and box sets, including Clint
Eastwood: 35 Years, 35 Films. You can learn about the 55-year-long career of this
legendary octogenarian in our cover story on page 26.
Happy Father’s Day and congrats to grads from all of us at Costco! C

KAREN MILLS IS THE fifth administrator of the
Small Business Administration (SBA) we have covered
in The Costco Connection.
Erskine Bowles appeared on our March 1994 cover.
A few months after that he became Clinton’s White House
deputy chief of staff, then chief of staff. Later, he accepted
an appointment as United Nations deputy special envoy
for tsunami-affected countries. Bowles then became
president of the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill, and will be retiring at the end of this year.
Replacing Bowles during the Clinton administration
was Philip Lader, who also served as White House deputy chief of staff, but before his
SBA stint. We covered him in our June 1995 issue. During Lader’s tenure, the SBA top
spot was elevated to Cabinet status. After the SBA, Lader served as ambassador to the
United Kingdom. In recent years, he has been chairman of WPP Group, one of the
world’s largest advertising agencies.
Appearing on our cover in March 1997 was Aida Alvarez. With that appointment,
she became the first Hispanic woman and the first Puerto Rican to serve in the United
States Cabinet. After heading the SBA, Alvarez was elected to the Board of Overseers
of Harvard University. During the 2004 presidential campaign, she was the official
spokesperson for John Kerry.
In our August 2002 issue, our cover featured Bush appointee Hector Barreto. After
resigning that position in 2006, he wrote a book, The Engine of America: The Secrets to
Small Business Success from Entrepreneurs Who Have Made It! (Wiley, 2007).
And now we are featuring Karen Mills. But I’ll let assistant editor Stephanie E. Ponder
tell you about her, beginning on page 22. C
