look for different shapes in the clouds, have
someone wait in line while the rest go to the
bathroom. The idea is to be together and create memories, not nightmares.

Avoiding e-mail scams
I was pleased to see the article on e-mail
scams in The Costco Connection [May 2010,
Consumer Connection] column. However,
one piece of advice will actually increase the
risk to consumers. The bullet point about
researching the e-mail address “extension”
(domain) implied users should type the
domain (the example was
www.3reitu.com)
into their Web browser.
If users were to actually do this, they
would be almost assured of getting a malware
infection that could then capture financial
passwords via keyloggers [spyware programs
that record victims’ keystrokes], install fake
antivirus scams and the like.
A better way to research a domain is
through Google. Entering the domain name
as a Google search will generally bring up
near real-time blog and social-networking
comments from other users who have been
caught in the scam, with information on how
they’ve fought it. Plus, Google will often flag
the link to the domain itself (generally the
first result on a search like this) as a “
dangerous site,” which gives an additional level of
warning to less experienced users.

A COMPANY
CLAIMING TO
BE COSTCO is asking
people to renew their
Costco memberships and
to provide their credit card numbers. Costco
did not send these e-mails, and never
requests credit card numbers by e-mail.
Other companies are sending out
Costco Cash Card offers that appear to
be from Costco. While Costco occasionally
uses Costco Cash Cards as an incentive
as part of various company promotions,
our offers will always direct you to one of
our retail locations or to Costco.com.
