can get closer or get more involved over time
because the animals get more used to you. You’re
trying to catch animals doing what they do, and the
less disturbed they are, the more likely they are to do
what they do.”
Captured on video are extraordinary scenes of
survival in nature never seen before, and technology
played a part.
“[The BBC has] been doing this for 50 years,”
Gunton says. “Every production builds on the previ-
ous production. Every production tries to break a
little new ground in technology. We adapted things
that had been developed on Planet Earth. One of the
things we did was use a fair amount of very high-
speed photography to reveal pieces of behavior that
you and I could never see. When it was too slow, we
used time-lapse photography.”
Often, the production team didn’t know what
they had until they watched the footage, and what
they found was a scintillating world of wildlife won-
der to amaze human eyes. C
