Because of this, your body will need more fluids than normal. Fluids also help your body
decongest, which helps you get better faster,
while eating keeps your strength up.

MYTH: Touching the skin is a
reliable test of one’s temperature.
How a person’s forehead feels to the
touch can be affected by many things. The
only way to gauge a person’s true internal
temperature is with a reliable thermometer.
MYTH: Fevers cause brain
damage and fevers higher than
104 degrees are dangerous.
Although seeing a temperature reading of
104 degrees or so can cause alarm, fevers with
infections don’t cause brain damage. Only
internal temperatures of 108 or higher, which
are extremely rare, can cause brain damage.
MYTH: Temperatures between
98.7 and 100 degrees are low-
grade fevers.
Your internal temperature goes through
normal variations throughout the day, typically peaking in the late afternoon and evening. A low-grade fever is an internal
temperature of 100 to 102. C

WHEN I WAS raising my children, the only thermometers
available were the rectal or oral
mercury type. Since then, the
latest and greatest thermometer advancement is the Exergen
Temporal Artery Thermometer;
it’s both noninvasive and easy
to use, providing an accurate
temperature with just a simple,
gentle stroke across the forehead.
The Exergen thermometer
uses infrared technology to measure temperature over the temporal
artery in the head in about two seconds.
As you move the thermometer across the
forehead, a sensor scans naturally emitted
infrared heat from the arterial blood supply
while also measuring the ambient temperature of the room. Software then balances
the two separate readings to accurately
determine and display body temperature.
Whether you need to take your own,
an elderly parent’s, an infant’s or an adolescent’s temperature, you will find the
Exergen thermometer to be easy to use,
accurate and noninvasive. C
