I RECENTLY turned 21.
Yes, I know the picture at the left shows me looking a
bit older. (If it were more current, I’d look even older.)
The 21 I am talking about is the number of years I
have worked at Costco. That may sound as if I’m one of the
longest-serving employees here, but the truth is that when
it comes to management, I am something of a newbie.
This thought was brought home recently with the
retirement of the first executive hired at Costco, Dick
The fact is, like several other of the founding executives of Costco, Dick had worked
with Jim at two previous companies: Price Club (which merged with Costco in 1993) and
FedMart. In total, the pair worked side by side for 49 years.
This brings me to a point about continuity. Among the many aspects of Costco’s success, I would put high on the list the fact that not only has the founding management team
stayed essentially intact for 27 years, but their roots go even deeper. These are people whose
approaches and relationships with one another have stood the test of time. They are people
who can just about finish one another’s sentences, while bringing forth their own thinking.
Far from stifling new thinking, the deep relationships of this team have set clear standards for everyone at Costco—standards that focus on innovation, integrity, discipline and,
yes, having a bit of fun along the way.
