Mao’s China in 30 years, in order to go to
America to study with the Houston Ballet.
More than just a book about ballet, this story
gives a glimpse into the history of U.S.–China
relations. It also shows how faith, hard work
and a loving family can help people succeed
and persevere through even the most difficult

The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance
and Survival, by John Vaillant. It’s December
1997, and a man-eating tiger is on the prowl
outside a remote village in Russia’s Far East. In
this true story, the tiger isn’t just killing people,
it’s annihilating them—apparently engaged in
a vendetta. Vaillant re-creates the event, giving readers a richly detailed portrait of this
beautiful and mysterious region. I was
impressed with how much I learned about
Russia, Amur tigers and the culture of Russia’s
Far East. Vaillant skillfully combines history,
realistic characters and suspense, staking his
claim as a master of storytelling. [This title

These kits really are too cute for words; I’m
not sure which I want more: to be a kid again,
or for my infant daughter to be old enough to
enjoy them herself.—MM
