Boardwalk Empire, by Nelson Johnson. The
true story that inspired the new HBO series of
the same name recounts the fascinating history of a little seaside health resort and tourist
town called Atlantic City, and the corrupt
political organization that controlled it for
decades. At the heart of this retelling is the
second of the big bosses who ruled the city,
Enoch “Nucky” Johnson, one of the most
beloved and colorful characters in the city’s
history. By endorsing drinking, gambling and
prostitution during Prohibition, Johnson,
who always wore a trademark red carnation
in his lapel, orchestrated the rise of Atlantic
City from a boardwalk town to “the world’s
playground.” Available in early September in
select locations.

Gone, Baby, Gone, by Dennis Lehane. In two
months Lehane’s new novel, Moonlight Mile,
featuring private investigators Patrick Kenzie
and Angela Gennaro, will hit Costco’s book
table. Until then, I suggest revisiting the PIs by
(re)reading Gone, Baby, Gone. In the rough-and-tumble Boston suburb of Dorchester,
Kenzie and Gennaro investigate the disappearance of a 4-year-old girl. Once they’re involved in the case—one they didn’t even want
to accept—the two find themselves getting
deeper into a world of crime and depravity.
