awareness of certain problems, and especially
my specific actions getting involved in the
Amazon and indigenous rights. You see how
life imitates art imitating life. The feedback
between a film—which is a piece of entertainment, but the messages contained within
that film [are] actually resonating in the real
world—and the filmmaker going and having
a voice in the specific problems that are taking place right now. What I call ‘Pandora for
real.’ People are down there with bows and
arrows in the Amazon rain forest fighting
the bulldozers of this massive hydroelectric
dam project, and it’s happening right now
exactly the way it happens in the film.
things I wanted to emphasize is the relationship between what the actors were doing and
what the final characters do on screen, and
show how this is 100 percent an actor-driven
process. It’s not an animation-based process,
even though it uses computer animation.
There’s plenty of other stuff too—the
script, the treatment, all kinds of images, an
entire art gallery of all the conceptual [paint-ings done for the movie]. It’s a banquet. We
wanted to create a real banquet. We went
through every single thing that we felt would
illuminate the experience of Avatar or the
world of Pandora and put it in there in a way
that makes sense. C
CC: Was that in your mind when you
wrote the film?
JC: Not at all. I felt that I would make the
film, and my job, as an artist, was just to make
a personal statement, and if people agree with
it, fine; if they don’t, fine.
CC: What about the new technology
used in making the film?
JC: The “making of” featurette is a great
way to sit down and really see soup-to-nuts
how the film was conceived, how it evolved,
what the trials and tribulations of the process
were and how the new technologies were
developed. We created three different camera
systems for the making of this film. One of the
