NONFICTION
Colonel Roosevelt, by Edmund Morris. I
have one friend who is inexplicably drawn to
anything having to do with Victorian
England. Another has a healthy obsession
with the Russian revolution. Me, I’ll read just
about anything that covers the United States
in the early 20th century. And few figures
from that time are larger than Theodore
Roosevelt. This book covers the last 10 years
of Roosevelt’s life, including an almost successful campaign for the White House in
1912 and trips to Africa, Brazil and more.
This book has more adventure, humor and
drama than most fiction titles.

FICTION
An Object of Beauty, by Steve Martin.
Claiming to have art in her blood because her
grandmother was once a model for a famous
Maxfield Parrish painting, young Lacey Yeager
goes to work at Sotheby’s and begins to ambitiously carve out a place for herself in the New
York art world of the early 1990s. While the
market builds to the tragic events of September
11, 2001, Lacey mysteriously manages to fund
a gallery of her own. When the FBI shows up
asking questions, she has to use all her maneuvering skills to stay ahead of them.
While Lacey is not a particularly likeable
character, this book is a great read. Martin,
the actor, comedian and author, is also an art
collector, and he writes lovingly about art and
the world that swirls around it.

Gulliver’s Travels, by Jonathan Swift. Swift’s
most famous novel is a satirical literary classic.
The misanthropic tale follows Lemuel Gulliver
as he voyages to far-off lands and encounters
some curious inhabitants with even more curi-
ous names, including Lilliputians, Brob-
dingnagians and Houyhnhnms. Gulliver’s
adventures are sure to please children of any
age. A film adaptation, starring Jack Black as
Gulliver, is due in theaters on December 22.
