THE ENTRÉE USUALLY draws the most “oohs” and
“ahhhs” in a meal, but side dishes play an important
complementary role. When it comes to choosing
a side dish, consider a healthy option using one
or more of the 14 powerhouse foods that I call
SuperFoods. These dishes can be as tasty as they
are nutritious.
SuperFoods are rich in nutrients, yet smart in
terms of calories. Research has shown that these
foods can help prevent—and in some cases
reverse—maladies such as cardiovascular disease,
Type II diabetes, hypertension, certain cancers and
even dementia. The good news is that they’re not
hard to find or necessarily expensive. I pick up most
of them at my local Costco.
