Sleepy time tips

AS ANY PARENT knows, when a youngster doesn’t get enough sleep, that little darling can quickly turn into a meltdown-prone monster.

What do you do if your child shuns sleep?

Costco member Kimberley Clayton Blaine, a licensed family and child therapist and mother of two boys ( www.theGo ToMom. com), suggests seven steps that any parent can follow to encourage good sleep habits.

Determine how much sleep your child should be getting. While the right amount varies with age and may also vary with the child, the following guide can help determine whether your tot is getting enough shut-eye:

• 1 year old: 13 hours

• 2 years old: 12 to 15 hours (includes nap)

• 3 years old: 11 to 14 hours (includes nap)

• 4 years old: 10 to 13 hours (includes nap)

• 5 years old: 10 to 12. 5 hours (no nap)

Develop a schedule and stick to it. With
consistent times for naps and bedtime, your
little one will know what to expect and adjust
to the circadian rhythm of the sleep schedule
you set. “Plan your errands and day trips
around naptime,” Blaine suggests, “and stick to
your nighttime schedule, even on vacation. If
your child knows that he can expect to sleep at
the same time every day—no matter where
you are or what you are doing—it will create
the sleep habits you want.”
