SPRING HAS FINALLY arrived!
Every year during this time, as we shake off the gloom
of the winter months, Costco embarks on a month-long
campaign to help bring some light into the lives of children
and their families. This campaign, known as Children’s
Miracle Network, raises money through member and
employee donations and company matching funds for 80
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH) across the
United States and Canada. Members will see paper balloons available for purchase at Costco cash registers.
Donations given to CMNH benefit the local Children’s Hospital. Each hospital decides how to best use the
funds, but typically funds help provide life-saving treatments for illness and injuries;
uncompensated and charitable care; medical equipment, from hospital beds and ambulances to surgical instruments and life-support machines; critical research; and preventive
education and awareness.
In 2011, the total funds raised in the United States and Canada, including a $2.25 million match from Costco corporate, was $20,176,462!
I want to thank Costco members and employees in advance for what I hope will be
another banner (or, more appropriately, balloon) year for CMNH!
A different way of providing aid for children in need is SeriousFun Children’s Network
founded by Paul Newman, the new name for the Association of Hole in the Wall Gang
And, while we’re recognizing those who help children, we certainly can’t ignore one of
the most important people in kids’ lives: Happy Mother’s Day to all you Moms!
See you at Costco! C

WHEN MY YOUNGER DAUGHTER was 10-, 11-,
12-ish she took endless joy in tinkering and inventing.
She loved to take discarded clocks or radios or can open-ers apart to see if she could reassemble them. She hammered pieces of wood together into strange new kinds of
shelving. She assembled cogs and door handles and
cords into, well, we couldn’t always tell, exactly.
Her inventive spirit ultimately led me to put together
a very large cardboard box filled with tools and odd
parts of things. We called it “Courtney’s Inventions Box.”
Did she become an inventor? No. But she went on
to film school and other creative endeavors.
I mention this because Rosalind Gray’s cover story about Sir James Dyson, inventor
extraordinaire, focuses on the fascinating links among the disciplines of engineering,
The actions of the successful inventor, artist, engineer, writer, builder, musician,
entrepreneur, research scientist, marketer rely on:
Working things out for oneself. Turning a walk through a sawmill into a way of
building a better vacuum cleaner. Having no fear of failure—none. Taking joy in the
process. Indefatigably pursuing a vision.
One of Dyson’s charitable activities is aimed at making the science classroom
more invigorating. Perhaps every so often an art teacher should be invited in as a
guest educator. C
