The Psychopath Test, by Jon Ronson. When
academics from around the globe start receiving a package containing the book Being or
Nothingness, accompanied by little more than
a one-line note signed “Joe K.,” Ronson sets
out to locate the author. As he digs into the
purpose of the book and whether it’s a hoax,
Ronson, the author of The Men Who Stare at
Goats, finds himself embarking on a journey
to understand psychopaths. Along the way he
interviews a CEO, a death-squad leader and a
patient in an asylum. What he learns has him
finding hints of psychopathy in nearly everyone, including himself.

My Cross to Bear, by Gregg Allman. Rock
and Rock Hall of Fame member The Allman
Brothers Band has seen many incarnations in
its more than 40 years of existence. Founding
member Gregg Allman, who has lived
through every one of the band’s highs and
lows, recounts a lifetime of experience on the
road with one of the most influential bands of
our time in his new memoir. Since the band’s
beginnings in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1969,
Allman has helped define Southern rock,
even after the tragic death of his brother, gui-
tarist extraordinaire Duane Allman. My
Cross to Bear is a gripping
tribute to his brother, and an
entertaining insight into the
life of one of his generation’s
greatest rock musicians.

FICTION
Summer Rental, by Mary Kay Andrews. For
two consecutive summers in high school, I
traveled to North Carolina’s Outer Banks
with my best friend and her parents. Even
though our teenage drama was nothing com-
pared to that lived by the book’s characters,
Summer Rental is a great reminder of those
vacations. In the novel, Ellis has recently lost
her job and is now rudderless, Julia can’t hide
from her insecurities and Dorie is betrayed
by the man she loved and trusted. For the
three women, a summer in the Outer Banks
is just what the doctor ordered. In addition to
being a fun summer read, this book is a great
way to whet your reading appetite for next
month’s Pennie’s Pick, Andrews’ Spring Fever.
