FICTION
Jasmine Nights, by Julia Gregson. I admit
that I originally picked up this book because
of its cover. I’m happy to report that the story
it tells is just as alluring. Saba Tarcan is a talented singer tired of playing tiny clubs in her
native Wales. She jumps at the chance to
entertain the troops in the Middle East.
While there she’s asked to go on a secret mission that risks not only her life, but that of the
man she loves.

The Third Gate, by Lincoln Child. Fans of
the thriller genre will be pleased to know
Child is giving them a fascinating new protagonist. Archaeological excavator and hunter
Porter Stone has made a discovery that may
change the world’s understanding of the
Egyptian pharaohs. When the dig is visited by
bizarre and deadly occurrences tied to a
curse, Stone calls in a quirky specialist in
inexplicable events to lend a hand. If the summer heat gets too much for you, Child’s latest
thriller is sure to give you the shivers.

Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Imperative, by
Eric Van Lustbader. If you think it’s been way
too long since the last Bourne film, have I got
something for you: the latest adventures of
Jason Bourne. The drowning man Bourne
fishes out of a frozen lake is nearly dead and
bleeding profusely from a gunshot wound. He
awakens as an amnesiac, with no memory of
who he is or why he was shot—and Bourne is
eerily reminded of his own past.

Stolen Prey, by John Sandford. Sandford
can always be counted on for gritty, white-knuckle suspense. The latest in the Stolen
series is no exception. Protagonist Lucas
Davenport investigates the murder of a seemingly innocent Minnesota family. Before the
case closes, Davenport must use his years
of experience and cunning to unravel the
secrets of horrific killings that seem so real
they could have been ripped right out of
today’s newspaper.
